Are you running any AV software ?
Is Thunderbird present in the Task manager when this happens ?
Nope, i shut down thunderbird, try and install and its the same every time.Has been happening for a long time now with every update that comes along.
and no AV software installed.

and nothing in the 0 folder.

That shows that the thunderbird.exe was definitely still in use so either thunderbird.exe is taking an extremely long time to exit, thunderbird.exe is hung, or some other process has launched thunderbird.exe.
Mark, can you or someone on the Thunderbird team triage this to find out why thunderbird.exe is not exiting / is in use?

I think we've had shutdown hangs with LDAP address books and IMAP accounts in the past, probably both on 3.1 - so if fisho74 uses either of those I guess it is a possibility.

Moving over to Thunderbird General for further triage. If thunderbird.exe being in use is found to be an app update bug feel free to move back to app update.

I dont use either to my knowledge.

Indeed, we have shutdown hangs - and it will be a miracle if they ever completely go away (through the hard work of many).
And if thunderbird failed to shut down (hang) and/or another thunderbird instance is running, then yes, that is a thunderbird problem. But the update mechanism should detect this and adjust, which is not a thunderbird-specific problem.
Or am I looking at this wrong?
