How would it work? Personally, I don't want to do App Tabs in Firefox. I want to make Apps on the phone's desktop.

Tabs that are always open. So if I load Fennec, I'm by default taken to my home tab as it is now, but if I open the tab list, my App Tabs are there. We shouldn't assume that everyone will dedicate home-screen space to App Icons, especially as the goal of Android at the moment is all about widgets.

There is certainly a cost to auto-opening (and keeping open) some tabs. Memory and left sidebar space come to mind.

I've filed some other bugs to deal with space in the tab strip. Memory may not have to be an issue, especially if all we're keeping alive is two optimised and compressed thumbnails and we load the page on click. Keeping the tabs pinned doesn't have to mean keeping them open while the app is closed.

If we call em App Tabs rather than Appcache, we promote familiarity from our desktop users promoting the feature. I'm a huge fan of providing the same usability across desktop and mobile, even if the implementation is different. Users should always think "oh it's that feature" rather than "oh what's this? something new to learn". Not to mention that current efforts are being made to provide desktop shortcuts for App Tabs on the desktop and that would fall inline with Mark's vision in comment 1, making this a natural foundation to follow the desktop evolution.
