I can confirm that this is a genuine problem
Logs would be helpful. Please complete these steps:

1. Go to about:config
2. Find services.sync.log.appender.debugLog.enabled and set it to true.
3. Restart and try syncing again.
4. Go to about:sync-log, save to file and upload it to this bug.

Tom, you might not be seeing the same problem as Rachel. Please file a separate bug. (One bug per user, please.)
I am experiencing the same problem, I noticed it first on Monday June 13th. Will try to get log after adding this comment. it happens repeatedly all day.... I would say every 10 minutes or so, sometime more often.

Thanks for the report, but as I already pointed out in comment 4, we prefer one bug per user. So please file a separate bug (see https://philikon.wordpress.com/2011/06/13/how-to-file-a-good-sync-bug/ for more info).

this is the sync log showing the error logging for this failure

I am providing a file with the sync log... this shows the error as a login failure...I have not changed my password, or even payed attention to the sync service in many months. I just let it work...it started for the first time on Monday. 
Is there any way to turn this feature off for awhile...just so I don't get the popups every 2-10 minutes? Its just kind of annoying after awhile to get the little footer popup again, and again, and again, again.
