Overview:
We're on the verge of setting webdev up for a lot of work to merge .com into .org and pepper the web with redirects. Before we invest too much time into what is going to only be a temporary solution (bandaid covers bullet hole), let's see what we can do in a quick and dirty way and let's see what happens when we do it (red flags, sad puppies, etc.).
Objective:
Copy pages from mozilla.com to mozilla.org to build a small use case for the much larger use case of the full site merge.
Dependencies:
TBD (please weigh in)
Work Needed:
Choose some pages from mozilla.com to copy over to mozilla.org (David, Laura, Steven, CB)
Copy over to mozilla.org & set up redirects (Steven)
Set up traffic distribution test (Laura)
Debrief on what worked, didn't work, red flags, etc.

I'd recommend taking the download page and putting it at www.mozilla.org/firefoxtest
It seems like that is the one page we're most interested in testing how it peforms.
At a minimum I know that locale detection will be a problem since mozilla.org doesn't do that right now, but I think that's a small thing to fix.

For this step, I'm assuming we don't want to set up redirects until after we test and sign off on things? We could have something on mozilla.org/firefoxtest without redirects and only we'd come across it.

Not sure if we want to do this now, wrt Bug 653814. When I finish what I'm working on, the things you want to do now won't be needed, and that's probably going to happen sometime next week.

+1 for the download page - that should include both versions of the mozilla.com homepage, ideally.
Also, Chrissie, which release cycle are we aiming at for this?

RE: locale detection - Steven/James is that a small thing to fix? Time estimate?

That's not a small thing to fix. It would require porting all of the code and rewrite rules for locale detection into .org, which I think is a waste of time since we shouldn't be moving in that direction anyway. Moving .org's content into .com is simply the easy way out, as Milos is proving by actually doing it.

I'm still confused with this bug and bug 653814, when Milos is already past this point and working on the merge. We can deal with problems as we find them. I vote for closing these 2 bugs and working within a general "merge" bug.

I'm totally with James here. What I have is already working mozilla.com website with mozilla.org content. So, moving content around just to test if it's going to work makes not much sense to me, as I already proved it's working(on hagege branch staging website).
I'd rather close these bugs and have a working bug for merge.
Thoughts?
