I've made a challenge page redesign. Here's mockup: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8176339/challengepage.png
To get here, we need to tackle bugs whiteboarded [mojo] 05-04-2011.
We also need options for challenge administrator to customize 1) sidebar and 2) above the fold areas, ideally with arbitrary HTML. This could be an extra field during the creation process, or an option to include another template.
We can also do this manually for the current challenges.
