Can you clean your browsers cache and retry downloading, you might have a corrupt cache which invalidates the downloads.

Thanks for your suggestion. Being only slightly computer literate I need to ask how to clean my browser" cache. I use Mozilla Firefox.

Thank you.
I uninstalled thunderbird again and after a slight delay since Tools no longer appears as an item on Firefox I cleared the cache.
I then downloaded and installed thunderbird again with the same result as previously. It still will not open.

Jim, what Windows 7 version do you use?
Do you have some antivirus\firewall enabled?

Hi,
I am using Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and Trend Micro Internet security Pro with both antivirus and firewall enabled. I was using both of these programs for a long time before the present problem arose.
