Could you export the event and attach the sample here? I assume that you choose a different start date and end date and therefore created an event that lasts several days.

Don't know how to just export just that event

Screenshot shows that you created an event that lasts several days. Open the event for editing and check that start and end date are set correctly. Lightning behavior is most probably correct if they are set to different dates.
What you can do to get a sample file is e.g. create a new test calendar, import/create the test event in this calendar, export the calendar using menu Events and Tasks.

What I have noticed is under the heading of "Today" the vent that was created to occur every 2 weeks shows under Today from 6/4/2010 until 8/XX/2012. What I expect to see is that under "Today" in Calendar heading that the event for only the re-occurrence of the event should show up (not the past or future events).

Maybe we have a simple misunderstanding here.
Your example: start date e.g. 2010-04-06 12:00, end date 2012-08-01 13:00 -> this means one occurrence of the events lasts 28 months. In addition it repeats every 2 weeks -> 2nd occurrence starts 2010-04-20 and ends 2012-08-15, 3rd occurrence starts 2010-05-04 and ends 2012-08-29, ...
Are you sure that you wanted to create such an event? Maybe you confuse the the end date of the (master) event with the until date for the recurrence rule?
Based on your description you want an event like start date 2010-04-06 12:00, end date 2010-04-06 13:00 -> one occurrence of the events lasts one hour. In addition you set the until date for the recurrence rule via Repeat -> Custom to 2012-08-XX.

Yes maybe is was a misunderstanding on my part as to how this was suppose to work logically with the start and end date. I revised the event as you described and started the event and ended it the same day but reoccurring every 2 weeks and now it only shows up once in the clandar under today but repeated every 2 weeks. Thanks for pointing out how it actually is suppose to work..
