using Pop or imap ?

(In reply to comment #1) > using Pop or imap ? Sorry of the length of time to reply. Working every day I did not have this problem with 3.1.9. However, when I uninstalled and reverted back to 3.1.9 the problem has stayed. I have found that the problem is isolated to one account only. There are 3 accounts, 2 are with the same provider (1 of these 2 accounts is the problem account) and one with a different provider (this one works fine.). I have tried deleting all contents of the account folder. This should initiate a download of all messages on the server. It has been 19 hours now and it has only download 1/4 of them. Most all are plain text emails. I will try to wipe out the account and try again. Something happen when Thunderbird updated. If Thunderbird is open, it slows down the computer to make typing this message almost impossible. Not sure what was corrupted but it is making email miserable.
(In reply to comment #3) Have deleted and removed the account in question. Upon recreation the wizard will not allow completion because it states an incoming server already exists on this account. No amount of changing the information will allow me to create the account. Had to restore with mozBackup. Any ideas would be great.
Whatever is this is it is definitely tied to the update and not a clean install. I have installed Thunderbird 3.1.10 on my laptop (first time any version every installed on laptop ever) that has Seamonkey on it and the email works fine. Email arrives fast and does not slow the computer down. I have tried on my desktop (problem computer) to uninstall and delete all files and folder on the computer (minus registry) and it still will not download more than 3 at a time then wait 2-4 minutes. Doing the clean install eliminated the doubles for now but I still have not downloaded all of my emails. On my laptop it was done in a matter of 15 minutes. I almost think the update flubbed the registry or something else since I have wiped out everything else and reinstalled. have also posted at http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/thunderbird_3_1_10
I have done a clean install as well and yet the problem persists. I will say that like another person who is having this issue, I too upgraded to the latest release and I also had to run MalwareBytes (as did the other person) and then this started. MalwareBytes came after the upgrade. I use pop, and I have a popstate folder. I have compacted mailboxes, created new folders to reduce inbox size, did the delete .mbf or whatever it's called files and had them rebuild.
Oh, Vista Home Premium
I am also having the same issue. As soon as I start thunderbird, it starts to download the messages. And when all messages are downloaded and I restart thunderbird, (after restarting the PC or reconnecting to the internet) it again downloads all the messages. This happens every single time when I restart thunderbird. O.S : Win7 64-bit Thunderbird version : 9.0.1
pblackburn, were you able to gain more info? Tootie, sajid, I doubt your issue has same cause ad pblackburn

But it got clubbed with this defect because of the heading of this issue "Keeps downloading old messages from server again and again". but the whole point is that i m still not able to use thunderbird coz of this. I am planning to stop using thunderbird.
If we have a log of the pop activity perhaps the cause can be identified. Could you capture a log using the instructions at https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging with settings of pop3:5,timestamp

"imap.log" Just wanted to confirm what does 3:5 in pop3:5 means?

"imap.log" can your user write in %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\ ? ie what happens if you add echo toto >>%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\ before the line that launches Thunderbird ? > Just wanted to confirm what does 3:5 in pop3:5 means? Pop3 is the name of the protocol 5 is the level of logging.
Is this still going anywhere? pblackburn, you still see this problem in recent TB12? sajid, new information?

Downloads all messages from the server every time I started TB. I found it did it for several releases and it only quit when I reinstalled my OS. It was a problem somewhere in the computer but I did try wiping the profile, clean installs of TB, none of them worked. It would be nice to find a solution.
I have a similar problem of Thunderbird redownloading duplicate mails, but only when I'm very low on disk space. That means less than 20MB on drive C (Windows) and starting up Thunderbird, then the bug starts... yes, I'm sometimes that low on HD space.

It sounds like something something being caused by antivirus or firewall. If you see this in the future, please test with thunderbird started in *windows'* safe mode.
