Plain  text messages have the Latin/English parts of the text displayed in the proper fixed width fonts, but the Hebrew and Arabic parts are displayed in the variable width font.

Have checked all font settings are as they should be; have used a clean profile; and I get this behavior on Windows 7 but not on Win XP.

Seeing this with both TB 3.1.x and 3.0.x .

No, but worse. On that page, changing the font to Courier does nothing for _both_ English _and_ Hebrew. Using FF 4.0.1 .

Hmmm.

This is what happens when I change the Western monospace font from Consolas to Courier New - it affects Hebrew and Arabic as well. In Consolas there are probably no appropriate glyphs so it uses the default Arial or something like that.

If you stick this text in an HTML document wrapped by a <pre> element, and open it in Firefox, what do you see?

So, this is not a Gecko bug, I'd guess.  Something in mailnews is messing with something.  Can a mailnews guru investigate please?

This is a message composition window of Thunderbird 60.4.0 on Devuan ASCII (~= Debian Stretch), using the Cinnamon window manager. The message contains lines with 10 copies each of "narrow" & "wide" glyphs in English & Hebrew: M vs l, ש vs. ו (SHIN vs VAV). You will notice the 10 l's are the same width as the 10 M's, but the 10 VAVs are much narrower than the 10 SHINs.

Fonts:

Latin Serif font: "Cambria" (yes, that's the name of the font face)
Latin Sans Serif font : "Calibri" (again, yes, that's the actual name of the font face)
Latin Monospace: "Consolas"

Hebrew Serif font: "serif" (yes, that's the name of the font face)
Hebrew Sans Serif font : "sans serif" (again, yes, that's the actual name of the font face)
Hebrew Monospace: "Liberation Mono"
