655891 - Firefox Affiliates Program and destination

Overview: The Mozilla Affiliates program is a key driver of Firefox downloads. To date we have around 45,000 affiliates who have Firefox badges on their blogs and websites. The program currently lives on SFX, however due to complex issues with the SFX code base, it will be going offline shortly with the whole website. 

I created a bug back in Jan 2011 (bug 626766) - which caused a lot of discussion about how to migrate data out of SFX. I'd like to focus us in the project to build a new program, and rename the former bug to be purely focused on the data migration question.

In order to create a compelling affiliate program, we need to have 2 core functions

(i) it needs to be available in multiple languages for our community
(ii) needs to have a system whereby content can easily and quickly be refreshed e.g. once a month.


TIMING: Looking to get a first iteration ready for last days of Q2.

Project Scope: The project falls into 2 main areas

[1] Create a new destination for Affiliates. 

* creating a new dashboard and or way of tracking affiliate data
* creating a login area for affiliates to access
* creating a affiliate registration area for new affiliates and asking existing affiliates to complete
* creating an affiliate area on Mozilla.org/firefox for the program to display affiliate buttons / league table etc. 

[2] Migrating information from SFX - bug filed at 626766

* removing the program from the current SFX infrastructure (see bug 626766)
* migrating affiliate information per affiliate (see bug 626766)
* migrating affiliate button / tracking data (see bug 626766)



Note: As bug 626766 couldn't be ready in time for Firefox 4 launch - we created a temp solution with the help of Dbos on Mozilla.org for hosting buttons. These buttons are tracked in terms of clicks, however they are not tied to a persons account on SFX. They are stand alone buttons. Several members of the community have asked if they can localize this page, so they can serve their locale with these buttons - we are letting them happen, whilst we dont have another solution for them.
