Hi Tara,

Opening a separate bug for the phase 2 of nightly.mozilla.org redesign.
Priority is p2/p3.
bug wanted to give you heads up.

will need to schedule another brainstorm session for the redesign as there are a few changes from our last meeting.

thanks

Hey Grace

Please follow up on this bug with next steps (and perhaps a recap of our chat) when you are ready. I'd also need to know the timing.
- the goal is to keep the simplicity of the page but make the branding aligned with the rest of the mozilla.com pages and new channel branding

- slater/sean should weigh in on general design (template, background etc) that is aligned with the new branding of nightly

-maintain the simple layout (mainly the links to the build) but looking for recommendation on how we can improve alignment/position and organization of the builds in the page. recommendations on fonts and icons are also welcome

- we should also provide a bit more direction of what nightly is and simple directions on what users can expect and need to do ie: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/prerelease.html

-attaching a really horrible layout I put together as a sample.

Thanks Grace. Your mockup looks good to me - I'd add the universal Mozilla tab in the top right, but otherwise it seems right.

As for visuals, I'd like to use the dark spacey background from the Nightly about screen...we have a good look started there to build on. Overall it shouldn't look too user friendly...being a little foreboding is ok.
thanks john. what are the next steps here?
based from recent updates, i would also like to add a section for nightly for mobile builds in this page and open to recommendations on how to fit that nicely in the new layout.

currently, the unbranded page is being updated with this layout. (see attachment)

please advise. thanks!

Next steps: work with Tara to find a designer to knock this out. Shouldn't be too hard.

hi tara. any updates on this bug?
Im setting aside time tomorrow to work on this. Ill have something to share EOD Thursday :)
Thanks Ty Looking great so far. Quick thoughts / comments:

* Overall, looking good and I like the darker outer space feel. Sort of wish the Nightly logo would stand out more, but I suppose that's okay since the entire page echoes "nightly".
* Wordmark / Copy: Sean, does this look right to you based on the new lockups that you did? with the "build" in the end?
* Seems like we're missing the additional copy / context that Grace had requested in her wireframe... Ty, is there a reason why you took those out? Is there a nice way to bring those back in? For starters, maybe we can limit the button-heavy design and focus on allocating space for some additional copy content.
* The menu bar for switching between desktop and mobile is great. One nit: I feel like the styling makes it look like another button, with the wrong state. So, right now "desktop" downloads are exposed, but I feel like the "desktop" menu button is something I need to push on, whereas "mobile" looks like it's deactivated.

agree with tara. additional comments below.
+1 liking the darker background.
-it would be nice to have the nightly logo stand out a bit more.
-there are also some words that are a bit hard to see like the mobile tab.
- for the wordmark, we should just keep firefox nightly rather than firefox nightly build
Ty:
friendly ping on this to see if you have what you need.

Grace:
can you please update the bug with a desired hand-off date? that way we know what general date range we're working towards and can plan accordingly.

Thanks.
Thanks Ty, will take a closer look a bit later. Overall I think it's looking good. My main nit would be to style the "Desktop" and "mobile" to not look like buttons. b/c they're not buttons and we have plenty of other buttons below 'em :)

Grace, from a timing perspective... can we deliver these to you after work week? By end of July. Shouldn't be much work at this point and Ty could deliver earlier... but he needs to focus on something else for the next week.

Let me know if that raises any concerns.

+1
in addition, they desktop and mobile buttons are also pretty hard to see.

delivery date for end of july is fine.
if we can get this up and ready for the next release that would be great!

thanks!

hi tara. wanted to see if we can revisit this again. would like to get this ready by next merge. do you think we can review the new design by end of week?

thanks!
Ty, ping ?
Ill have updated designs for you tomorrow to review :)
I havent forgotten about this Grace. Im going to work on getting this readied for Monday for you look at.
I took a different approach with this version by reducing the button heavy layout and keeping content on one page versus separating "Desktop" and "Mobile" by use of a tab functionality.

FFx Nightly Builds Page - Combined

I like the new combined page A LOT. It looks great and it means users can see all available builds at a glance.

Bonus: it will be easier to implement in code ^_^

thanks ty. i really like how we were able to have everything in one page but still able to separate desktop and mobile. however, im a little worried it can also a bit overwhelming with all the builds and buttons in one page? Is there anyway we can simplify it? Or does the build windows slide from left to right maybe to hide the other builds?

or maybe nightly audience will like this set more? I was just thinking maybe having a very similar look and feel (clean and simple) to other moz sites (especially as do more Rapid Release site branding - Aurora it's own page etc).
I agree there's a lot on here, but isn't one of the points of this page that we don't want it to be too easy or inviting?

I agree with John here--I like the layout and it follows quite well from what people were experiencing before with the old nightly page.
I agree as well; the page isn't hard-to-use for a nerd, but *would* be a little overwhelming for someone who isn't our intended Nightly audience. I think that's spot-on.
I'm not the target audience for Nightly, but I like this new page a ton!

thanks for the comments. let's move forward with this design then. Ty, can you please post final PSD? Thanks Ty!
:tofumatt. opened implementation bug and assigned this to you. Bug: 678135
will post final psd there as well once Ty post the final PSD here.

Sounds good. I should let you know: I'm hard at work on our community phonebook (Mozillians) right now as we're nearing finishing all of the template work, so I'm not going to be able to tackle this for about two weeks.

Hopefully that's alright; I think this looks awesome and totally want to implement it, but there will be a bit of lead time on this.
hi matt,

do you know if anyone else has access to nightly yet?

lauraf, can someone else help out in implementing this page? Will close this bug now and continue implementation discussion in Bug: 678135.

thanks!
