Garbage in the bookmarks.html file
Some lines are followed by a line like one of thsse below:
	( $
	(
i.e. empty but for 2 or 3 garbage characters
Looking at the file in an editor, the problem is:
<DD>(
(yesterday there was just one but today there are two).
Bug found under both xp and 2k

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. every time bookmarks.html loads
2.
3.
Version: unspecified → 4.0 Branch
That file isn't used anymore ...
So in 4.0.1 we lose not only bookmarks.html but the ability to organise our bookmarks ..
Firefox uses the places.sqlite database since Firefox 3.0 (in 2008 !!). No, you can't organize your bookmarks anymore by editing that file.

By default, it's not even written anymore once the places.sqlite file exists (after migration). There are ways to change that (see <http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML>), are you using that preference ?

bookmarks.html can still be created (autoexporthtml pref) or imported (from the Library)
Organize Bookmarks has been renamed to Show All Bookmarks, but it's still there.

btw this is dupe of bug 593566.

Yes, and I use the bookmarks.html file as my home page.
I'll just have to learn a new habit .. (Not that the garbage alters the functionality.)
