If you update Firefox on desktop and it's the default browser, it will be the default browser once you'd updated. If you do the same on mobile, you're forced to manually set the preference again.

Fennec does not do this deliberately; I think Android clears the default handler preference whenever one of the handlers is installed/removed/updated.
yup, android does this if you update or install any application that handles the content type. For instance, I just installed Firefox Beta and it cleared my preference to use Firefox as my default browser.

none that I'm aware of. Glad to review any patch that gets submitted though.
