We should convert some more newsgroups.

Gen has requested mozilla.dev.accessibility.
Paul Osman has requested mozilla.drumbeat.website.

But we should choose some more. One key prerequisite is an available and willing moderator. justdave: can you provide a list of groups and their moderators? We can then email the moderators of groups we plan to convert to give them a heads-up, and post in groups with no moderator to tell them to pick one.

Gerv
Basically the lists that have a lot of spam need to be moderated.

That said, we need to make sure that the moderators agree to moderation (as it can be a bit of work to moderate, although if that is spread out over a few moderators then it's not a big deal).

I propose we look at all of the lists, see which ones are the most overrun with spam, select those, confirm with the moderators that they are ok with moderation (or add more moderators if needed).

The lists that are most overrun with spam are the ones that will benefit the most from moderation.
Gen: there are rather a lot of lists :-) It would be great if you had time to do that analysis.

Gerv
Gerv- I'm happy to draw up a list but the list moderators have to be on board to move forward.

Can we email all of the list moderators to see who will raise their hand to be in the next batch?
I've filed bug 670925 to get data on who is currently moderating.

Gerv
I now have the info. A lot of lists do not have explicit moderators. More have explicit owners, but some are "owned" by list-admin@mozilla.org and others are owned by people who may not actually want to own them if it meant moderation work (e.g. beltzner).

We need to do some work to get each list an owner/moderator. But before that, we need to fix bug 658972, otherwise the moderators will burn out really quickly.

I am in Mountain View next week, and I will talk to mrz about getting time to implement that.

Gerv
dev-usability is getting a lot of heated, unfocused, and in some cases insulting, arguments. Any objection to adding dev-usability to this batch?
https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/dev-usability says beltzner is the list-owner, so I'm CCing him.

I just took this bug over. I can't figure out what if anything has actually been done. Have any newsgroups actually been migrated to news?
Rick, a few lists have been moved to the new moderation system, such as community-philippines. Most others have not yet done so.

justdave has the latest info I believe.

Also bug 658972 would be great to solve as it is tied to spam in the lists.
Depends on: 658972
Yes, we can't really fix this bug before we fix that one, because all the moderators will burn out.

Rick: It's not about migrating to "news", it's about migrating to a new configuration whereby all the groups are moderated, and so all incoming messages come to us before going to Groups and news.mozilla.org. (Currently, messages coming in to those sources are posted there before being passed on to us, and so we have no spam or moderation control over them.)

Closing this out as we won't be migrating anymore lists/forums to the nntp/ggroups setup
