All,
This past week I have been gathering Sunspider, Kraken, and V8 performance numbers. These numbers show minimal improvement, therefore Laura and I decided to get rid of the performance graphs that are currently up on the Mozilla website (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/performance/ and http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/features/). We plan to replace these graphs with other visuals before the release of Firefox 5. Any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Laura and I will be working on a couple of ideas in the coming days.
One of the ideas Laura and I had was to replace the performance graphs with a live demo of the Runfield web application, which is currently hosted on the Web O’ Wonder webpage (https://demos.mozilla.org/en-US/). This will definitely show how well Firefox handles web applications. Users who currently have older versions of Firefox will have the option to watch a demo video of Runfield. This is how the implementation will look like (http://i51.tinypic.com/10p6dfs.png)

Thoughts?
That plan sounds good to me, thanks. This may already be on the to do list, but in case not we should also update the copy to the left of the video...at the very least we'll need to remove the version numbers, but it may also need a bit of polishing beyond that.

Also, moving this to a website bug (instead of a Firefox bug) so it can be tracked appropriately. Laura M, is this part of your Fx5 bug matrix?

This will be added to my spreadsheet tomorrow. We should definitely spruce up the copy here too.
Should we open a separate copy bug for mattej?
Please do - thanks!

Hey all,
Laura and I are working on changing the copy and format of the performance page. Please refer to the Balsamiq mockup ( http://i56.tinypic.com/358dnk1.jpg ) to see the changes we are proposing for this page. Please refer to the Etherpad
( http://etherpad.mozilla.com:9000/HuGh37chQN ) as you look at the Mockup. The goal of these changes is to cut down on the copy and make the page easy to navigate. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Wilson
Hey, I took a pass at the copy in the etherpad. Just some minor edits, but otherwise it looks good.
Is this ready for implementation, or should we wait on further changes/confirmation? Thanks.
Hey all,
The changes that Matej made look great, can others comment on the copy before Steven and his team implement these changes. Please make changes on the etherpad as you see fit
( http://etherpad.mozilla.com:9000/HuGh37chQN ). Thank you guys!

We also need to update the performance section on the Firefox Features page. Matej, can you look over the copy of this page, here is the ethepad
( http://etherpad.mozilla.com:9000/7wgYAhbc5S ).

Steven, for this page we need to remove the performance graph and replace it with the Runfield game/video. Please look at the etherpad for instructions (http://etherpad.mozilla.com:9000/7wgYAhbc5S). If you have any other questions please let me know!

Cheers,
Wilson
Copy looks good--John, can you comment on the plan--want to make sure you're okay with it before we start playing with the page.

Thanks!

Sorry about the slow response...let's move forward as planned. Thanks Wilson!
No problem John, I hope you are having a great trip! Lets get this implemented.

How does it impact the translated features pages we now have on mozilla.com for the Firefox 5 release ? Should I just remove the performance comparizon graph for them?
Its removing the graph, but we're also shortening the copy around what we did have. For now, if its easier, just remove the graph and anything that may refer to it--this is both on the performance page and the features page.
I replaced it by the illustration used on the performance page in r90521, ok with that?

We can do that, but can we make the illustration take the top left corner? It looks weird squished on the second row.
yes but it is a bit more work
done for French, please reload and tell me if it looks ok, thanks

Hmm, still doesn't look quite right--Slater, any suggestions?
Maybe make it smaller? Laura, what's bothering you about it?

> Maybe make it smaller? Laura, what's bothering you about it?

I think it looks a bit too squished--maybe making it smaller will help.
updated with a smaller image
Works for me - Laura?
Hey John,
This works as long as the image aligns with the copy of the page, and this can simply be done by making the image smaller.

Thanks!
Hi Steven--any progress here?

Will be working on this tomorrow/Friday - I'll update the bug with our progress.
Basic copy changes made to performance page in trunk in r90680. More to come.
Basic copy changes made to features page in trunk in r90681. Do I understand the etherpad (http://etherpad.mozilla.com:9000/7wgYAhbc5S) correctly that the Features page is also have have an embedded copy of the runfield game (in addition to the Performance page)?

I think we make the copy changes to the sections on the feature page. As to adding the runfield demo, I'd like to see what it looks like on the feature page too, but am conscious that we would then have two videos in that section. If we can't make it look right, especially after removing the perf graph, then I say we just link to the video from under the super speed section saying "watch the video for more".
Also, we need to be sure to remove the "4" in the page--I see one in the web application speed blurb.
Added the runfield game and fall-back content to the Performance page in trunk in r90900.
I'm seeing some major issues--the game keeps freezing on me (nightly, Mac OS X).

Is anyone else seeing perf issues?

If so, we should just show the video in its place and try and fix this for after fx 5.
Added the runfield game and fall-back content to the Features page in trunk in r90902. I made some adjustments to the layout of that area on the Features page to accommodate the game.

I can replicate the issue in the OS X nightly build, but not in Beta or Aurora. I think we might be seeing a browser bug here. Let's see what QA turns up.
Updated the Performance page content in trunk in r90905 (removed the third page section as in the wireframe).
Merged to stage in r90908.

Hey Steven,
I had a couple of people test the performance page (https://www-trunk.stage.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/performance/). It was tested across different operating systems. Here is the feedback:

User 1: I got a mixed content warning, using ubuntu 11.04
-works on 4, but not nightly (debug)

User 2: are the instructions supposed to stay even during gameplay?, also in ie9 it says "postMessage" is null (javascript error), and the game does not load at all.
- Using win7 x64, works on chrome and ff4

User 3: just froze for me, using Ubuntu 11.04 using nightly

User 4: it works well on ff4 OSX-64 bits

User 5: my CPU is at 100% before cliking on play- but the game is smooth, Aurora on Ubuntu 11.04 64bits

User 6: That demo works on some Firefox versions, not all. I am testing Mac and it doesn't work on Latest Trunk build, works on aurora

User 7: freezes for me in Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:7.0a1) Gecko/20110613 Firefox/7.0a1 ID:20110613030204

This seems to be a problem, therefore we should do what Laura recommended in Comment 33!
Re-opening this since it's having performance issues. Let's just show a video here until we're confident this isn't a issue.

Here is the link to the Runfield Video: http://videos-cdn.mozilla.net/serv/mozhacks/demos/screencasts/runfield/screencast.webm

Here is the link to the actual game: https://mozillademos.org/demos/runfield/demo.html

It would be great if we could have a link to the game below the video.

Steven do you need anything else?
The performance issues are likely with the game itself, certainly not something that could be debugged by tomorrow.

I've swapped in a video preview and link in place of the running game in trunk in r90959. Merged to stage in r90960.

That makes two merges to stage that will need to go into production: r90908 and r90960.

This looks great guys--thanks for keeping track of this one!
I can't get the video to play for some reason--may need to double check video link.
fixed in r90995
my fix merged to stage in r91010

Same fix applied to Features page in trunk in r91014 and merged to stage in r91017.
pushed to production r91052
