Automatic updates are set in Option -> Advanced -> Update. However, there should be no notification for Firefox 5 (final), that is not yet released. Are you sure you aren't on the "beta" channel of FF4? Can you provide a screenshot of your whole FF window and this notification?
If I open about:config, app.update.channel is set to release. Otherwise I'm not sure where to look for this info.
Try this: 1. right click the icon for your Firefox, click Show Package Contents. 2. and navigate to Contents/MacOS/defaults/prefs/channel-prefs.js 3. check if there is also the "release" channel set. (I do not know Mac OS X, but these instructions were given to me).
That worked. Not the friendliest solution but does the job.

So what was the problem? Did you have "beta" in there?
On one machine with the issue it said release and the other said beta. Not sure if this is relevant but the machine which had beta in the file is the 'first' machine and the other was synched to it (using Firefox Sync, I mean).
So you rewrote beta to release and no longer get the notification on both machines? You say you got the notification even on the second machine that had release in the file channel-prefs.js ?
You need to log in before you can comment on or make changes to this bug.
