On _some_ Web Pages the Down Arrow will not scroll the Page down. If I move the Mouse slightly and then use the Down Arrow it starts working fine. This happens on many Web Pages that I visit (perhaps _my_ habit of using the Down Arrow makes it more apparent to _me_).

1. Try the example URL (sometimes that Page demonstrates the Problem and sometimes it does not).
2. Press the Down Arrow (hoping to scroll the Page down to read more).
3. _IF_ the Page fails to scroll down then bump the Mouse and try again.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Expected Results:
Down Arrow ought to scroll the Page down (or is it a new UI that it is polite to awaken the Mouse first). ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶
Works fine for me on:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:7.0a1) Gecko/20110607 Firefox/7.0a1

Reporter, is your issue still reproducible using Firefox in Safe Mode and/or with a new empty profile?

Still a problem with Aurora (thanks for reminding me that FF7 is out).

It only occurs _occasionally_ when:
1. you load a new Tab and switch to it
2. read some text for a while and then
3. hit arrow-down (which then will not work _until_ you bump the mouse)

The bestbuy.ca site also seems bad for this, perhaps it is Javascript related.

I see this happen so often I'm surprised no one is confirming this, fortunately I need only flick (push) the mouse to fix it.
To reproduce with 100% success (using FF6):

0. Start Aurora FF6.0a2 (2011-06-07).
1. Right-click on [Help][Restart with Add-ons Disabled].
2. In the Safe-Mode popup check all Boxes to disable everything and [Continue].
3. Click [+] (on Tab Bar) to open a new Tab and load 'somewhere'.
4. Repeat Step three a few times.
5. Click [+] (on Tab Bar) to open new Tab and load http://www.google.com/ .
6. Enter a Search Term, click [Search] and DO NOT move the Mouse.
7. ***** Wait over 4 minutes. *****
8. Press [\|/} (Down-Arrow) as much as you wish, the Page will not scroll down.
9. Tap the side of your Mouse.
10. Press [\|/} (Down-Arrow) and the Page will scroll normally. It will JUMP a large distance IF you pressed the down-arrow many times in Step 8.

Important Cautionary Note: Depending upon which Add-ons you had installed you may need to reset and initialize MANY things. TM+, NoScript and others will loose ALL settings and you will need to re-enable all Extensions and Plug-ins, IF you follow all the above instructions, to the letter, using FF6.

Rob, on a clean profile I'm still not able to reproduce your issue using the steps to reproduce from Comment 3.
Version: unspecified → Trunk
A very loosely related BR where moving the Mouse affects the Browser is demonstrated in Bug 647174 it is accompanied by low Memory.
A closely related BR where moving the Mouse affects the Browser is demonstrated in Bug 627084 it is accompanied by low Memory. It is not close enough to be a dupe.
I have the same problem with Firefox 5.0.

I scroll around with the cursor keys and all of a sudden it stops working. I click (I'll try if moving the mouse is enough) and it works again... for a while at least.

I also get that weird large jump (as mentioned in comment #3) if I press the key longer or more often.
Moving the mouse is indeed enough.

I still don't see any kind of pattern though. It seems to happen randomly.
It works on _this_ Page if you wait over two minutes, assuming you have enough open Tabs and other things going on to run low on memory (or Processor resources, or what ever is the cause).

That makes it easy to check as you can simply wait here two minutes (without touching the Computer) and then check if your Cursor Keys (up or down) work.
Raising "Importance" due to confirmation in Comment 7.
Severity: minor → major
Still occurs using Nightly 9.0a1 (2011-08-24) on bugzilla.mozilla.org .
i've been on buy a bunch recently and not seen this.
currently running 20111123 trunk on vista

note : confirmation of bug isn't a reason elevating importance. indeed, if bug has an easy workaround it's often put at minor
Severity: major → normal
er, best buy.

OK to leave it at normal.

The "workaround" (knock the mouse on the side with your knuckle) is not an obvious one. I don't think this should be a minor as it is indicative of (guessing) either Interrupt timing or focus (the later seems more likely but excessive high priority System Calls could deny Interrupts).

BTW: It does still occur rarely (and not just on BB but also here at BMO See Comment 9). I see it using Nightly on WinXP, two months ago it occurred a couple of times a day but recently it is barely once a weeks.
Firefox actually doesn't scrolling. It stops redrawing. (Is it possible to rename this bug?)

The giveaway were GIF animations which also stopped whenever this happened.

Still occurs on Nightly 15.0a1 BUT this is the first time I've seen it happen THIS year; thus the occurrence (reproducibility) of this Bug has dropped enormously.

Here was the URL where it occurred (after less than a 15 min. wait): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?s=af5ed926c7b0f2b1d243779347635d99&t=1380064

I'll watch out for "GIF animations". It is possible to use the Mousewheel (carefully) without bumping the Mouse and the Page will scroll but if you go back to the arrow keys they remain inactive (until you at least 'bump the mouse' or click on the Page).

>(Is it possible to rename this bug?)
We could but after 6 months (when you posted, and nearly a year now) will the name change make this Bug easier for people to find or more difficult? Would people realize that "the screen is not being redrawn" (if that is true) or would they know their arrow keys are not working (as suggested by the current name).

I'll leave this will someone upstairs, I don't object to the change but I won't be the one to do it (yet/this month).
I have not seen this Bug occur in months, closing.
