Jay, we probably need to make a blog post or some other comm. re: the DMCA take-down of Doom. :(

Paul and Alon should be able to do something on Hacks so people have an update. I think we were thinking about removing the post, but I rather update it with more info on what happened. Paul/Alon: Can one of you please take that action item? Thanks!
So, while waiting for the blog post, I wonder what about DMCA can takedown a javascript port of an open source game.
Our legal team is looking into it, so we should have more info soon. We were surprised with the DMCA notice as well, so it's a matter of finding out if the person that issued it was unaware of the open source license or if we are somehow infringing on the "Doom" trademark in some way not covered by the license or terms of use. Thanks for your patience.
I updated the blog post with this notice: "We had a doubt whether this port of the Open Source Doom respected its term of use. We decided to remove it from our Website before taking an informed and definitive decision."
Can I put in a request that said DMCA posting be submitted to Chilling Effects? Doom (as was posted on the link I pointed to be dead), is a dual licensed game (Doom Source License <http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Doom_Source_License> and GPLv2 <http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html>). The only infringement I can think of (and don't get me wrong, I have NO clue how you created this game in the first place), is if you used the proprietary IWAD files. If they file a DMCA notice against you for said happening, then consider every linux distribution that I have ever used guilty of the same charge, because they distribute the same files. If I am wrong (and I very may well be), feel free to correct me. However, this issue, as far as I can see, relates directly to the issue of was Doom truly released under the GPL license.
Hey everyone. These are all very worthwhile discussions (and please do to continue them!), but the original issue mentioned here has been resolved. We are aware that the game has been taken down and have posted the DMCA takedown notice (https://wiki.mozilla.org/Legal/Infringement_Notices/3_June_2011).
