Following up from bug 658884: firefox.com/sync redirects to https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/mobile/sync/ (for the en-US locale at least). It seems to be the most if not only prominent place of Sync promotion on our websites so I'm going to assume that this is effectively Sync's "homepage". (Please correct me if this isn't true!) Some questions that crossed my mind while trying to make sense of our web presence and watching other people do the same: * Why is this page under the mobile section and why is the page title "Firefox Sync for Mobile"? This means it will appear in Google searches that way which seems counterproductive. * Why is it still suggesting that I download Firefox 4 if I already have it or a later version installed? Suggested action items: * Make Sync independent of mobile. That's not to say we shouldn't promote it strongly as a mobile feature, but users will not necessarily discover it this way. As recent experiments have taught me, most will start off by googling. * Make page aware of the Firefox version the user is running, possibly even the platform, to adjust the instructions.

Phil, There's a lot going on behind the scenes. Closing this bug, but (as I mentioned earlier today) when you are back in town, let's meet in person to discuss the Sync strategy and the many things that are in progress (there are a lot of moving pieces and I'm happy to bring you up to date). Thanks so much for your insight and great ideas! Best, CB

There was a little bit of confusion on how to approach these issues. I think we sorted those now. Sorry for conflating so many issues in this bug. It was mostly intended as a tracking bug, marking it as such now. Thanks, Chrissie, for already filing bug 662828 on eliminating the Firefox version on the page! It would also be great if we could get rid of the download button altogether if the user is already using the current Firefox stable version or better. That would probably be a separate bug? And then there's the matter of Sync being under the Mobile section right now. I have no own thoughts here since I don't know what your overall concept for the website is. My suggestion would be to market it on its own, as a feature spanning both Firefox for desktop and mobile. It might also make sense to create a new Services section.

Hi guys. Regarding the concept of where to put the Sync page, it was placed in the mobile section b/c when we did that it was pretty solidly a mobile product. I understand, of course, why that's no longer the case now. I think in the slightly longer term the idea of a 'services' section for the site would be a great idea. In the short term, though, I personally think it still works in mobile...mobile, after all, is probably the best example of the sync value prop so it doesn't seem out of place there to me. Perhaps we could do some cross-linking from the appropriate desktop pages to increase discoverability, but with the way the site currently is I think the mobile section works fine for now. I also would suspect that most people will discover sync, not by browsing the site for it, but by being directed to the page either from in-product promotions or by organic search. So, I don't see the current page location as a huge problem but am happy to keep discussing.

I understand, of course, why that's no longer the case now. (Sync was never just a mobile feature only, so absolutely nothing has changed. At least since I was hired over a year ago ;). There are, of course, good reasons to strongly market it as a mobile feature. This just as a historical note.) > I think in the slightly longer term the idea of a 'services' section for the > site would be a great idea. So, I > don't see the current page location as a huge problem but am happy to keep > discussing. I see no problems with keeping this page in the mobile section for now until we understand the rest of the upcoming services better. I do recommend, however, that we make some changes to the page itself to also cater those people who aren't specifically interested in mobile and still end up there: * The in-product promotions will link there, yet we only mention how to connect a mobile device as a second device. * The page title and hence the google search hit mentions "Firefox Sync for Mobile", so people googling for "Firefox Sync" might think that that page isn't what they're looking for. I guess what I'm trying to say is: there currently is no good page on our website for *all* Sync uses (mobile *and* desktop).

Thanks Philipp. I know that sync has never literally been just a mobile product, but was making the point that from a marketing & website perspective that was (and probably still is) the main use case. As for your suggestions for making the page more applicable to mobile *and* desktop, I agree 100%. Just so I'm clear, that's what this bug is for, yes? Thanks!
