Matej,

As a first step towards redesigning this landing page for Sync, can you help us with a copy refresh.

*Simpler instructions to start using Sync
*Clearer value proposition that speaks to the user & excites her!
*Include your suggestions for a future redesign of the page, major goal - get people to start using Sync today!

Shooting for a due date of Thursday, June 16, 2011
One thing to note here is that there is work being done to improve the Sync set up process, see https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Features/Sync_Setup_Improvements , the dependencies table where I call out the parties that will be affected and what needs to be delivered back and forth. We are in the planning phase right now so I do not have a timeline of when these changes will land. You can assume no earlier than Fx8. I intend to partner with the web dev folks to make sure our schedules are aligned. Once we flesh out this feature more I can give more timeline information.

As for changing copy, please include me in those talks. Thanks.

Jennifer,

Thank you for including the link to the wiki. This bug is for a very lite copy update to improve the immediate experience, and before it would go over to the next phase (webdev) we'll make sure you have sign-off as the product owner.

Matej will provide a draft for edits and we'll finalize together with all of the items you've listed for consideration.

Right now, we don't have design resources for a full redesign or dev resources for enhancing the browser detection experience.

We will have both of those in the next few weeks, and now that we've been introduced, we'll be in sync for future upgrades to the product on the website!

Best,
CB
Renamed bug for clarity.

OK, here's a shot at this. I updated the headline and subhead to be in line with what we're using in the What's New page. I like that it mentions Firefox overtly, but otherwise it's only a slight change.

I made it a 4 step process instead of three, but each step is now just one line. I also added a quick lead-in and sum-up to make it seem simple and to reiterate the benefit.

I tightened up the For Older Versions section and cut the security part by a lot. I feel it's important to let people know that their data is safe, but I don't think it needs to be as prominent or wordy as it was before.

Have a look and let me know what you think:

Keep Your Firefox in Sync
Access your history, bookmarks, tabs and passwords from any device.

Just follow these simple steps:

1. If you haven’t already, download the latest version of Firefox for desktop.

2. Find Sync in the Preferences menu on your Mac or go to Options in the Firefox menu in Windows.

3. Create a Sync account with an email address and password.

4. Select Add a Device and follow the instructions.

That’s it! Now you can take your Firefox with you wherever you go.

For Older Versions
If you’re still on Firefox 3.5 or 3.6, you’ll need to download the Sync add-on first. After that, just follow the same steps.

Sync Keeps You Safe
Sync protects and encrypts your data so no one else can access it. That means you’re safe from online bad guys or companies that may sell it. Everybody wins! (Except the bad guys, but that’s the point.)
This is great, Matej!

I'm wondering if we can detect whether the user is using Firefox and hide this step if that's the case.

I would recommend removing this paragraph (For Older Versions) entirely. We're decommissioning the Sync add-on very soon. Please also see bug 662967 which is already fixed. So in a way we would be introducing a regression here ;)

That would be great. Let me know if that's what we end up doing because then we could lose the step number and reword it a bit so it doesn't say "If you haven't already..."

Perfect. Even cleaner!
Closing this copy bug as resolved and opening up website bug 665401

Will also open up a new bug for FX version detection after talking to the team about a visual redesign of the page v. too many tiny changes on a page we're going to redo entirely:)

Hey Chrissie, any updates on this? It would be nice if the messaging could be streamlined even further by detecting the user's browser and OS (we could get rid of the "if you haven't already downloaded Firefox" bit and we could give them platform-specific instructions).
You need to log in before you can comment on or make changes to this bug.
