spun-off from bug 657038. the simple styling implemented there does not vertically center text compared to the icon.
There are 2 possible approaches there in the quoted part of bug 657038 comment 13 and in bug 657038 comment 17.  Both are a bit cumbersome though, so if we may come with a simpler approach, it would be nice.
