AFAICS this is #78414. Since File->Close has been "streamlined" away this bug has become even more painful. Do you think it would be possible to enable File->Close again, at least till 78414 has been fixed? Reproducible: Always

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:7.0a1) Gecko/20110615 Firefox/7.0a1 In order to get the "close" option in the File menu, please perform the following steps: 1. Edit | Preferences | Tabs - disable Always show the tab bar 2. Close all tabs except for just one 3. Open menu by pressing ALT+F

You mean ctrl-w has been grabbed by the plugin, but alt-f might still work? Sorry to say, but it doesn't.

Why should those shortcuts be ignored? Those work pretty well and close my tabs. Can you provide a screencast or more in-detail steps? Thanks.

This procedure might help to reproduce the problem: 1. terminate firefox 2. make sure its gone 3. start firefox with flash installed and visit http://nvidia.com/ 4. klick on the big flash animation 5. klick on Firefox' back button to go back to http://nvidia.com/ again 6. try ctrl-w or alt-f When I try, then the shortcuts are ignored. Can you reproduce this? I tried firefox 4.0.1 on Linux amd64.

PS: Please don't misunderstand me: This bug report is _not_ about the ignored shortcuts. Its about putting the File --> Close menu entry back into place as long as the shortcut problem is unresolved. The shortcut problem (#78414) is open for 10 years now, and I don't see any indication that it might be fixed.

In comment 0 you are talking about http://google.com/ where I do not see any plugins being involved. Can you please clarify?

Google had a flash animation on their home page (the Gibson thing, AFAIR). Today its gone. Can you reproduce the problem using NVidia's page?

Let me see if I get this right: when focus is on a plugin (flash or whatever) and shortcuts are ignored(ALT+F being one of them), going with the mouse in the File menu does not display the Close tab option and you are not able to close a tab (CTRL+W also disabled)?

If you replace "tab" by "window", then its correct. I haven't tried tabs. I can close all Xwindows with the help of the window manager, of course.
