Performance Improvements

    * IMAP Folder Synchronization

      Thunderbird will download IMAP messages by default in the background to allow for faster message loading and better offline operation. This feature can be enabled on an individual folder basis via Folder properties, or for all folders in an account via Account Settings / 'Synchronize & Storage'.

    THIS IS A "BAD" DEFAULT." TYPICALLY THE USER DOES NOT KNOW OF THIS DEFAULT! THEN HIS P-C RAPIDLY FILLS UP WITH MESSAGES. I GOT MUCH MUCH MUCH!!
    AND THOSE ON THE P-C DO NOT GET DELETED WHEN THEY ARE DELETED ON THE IMAP SERVER!!!!!!!!!!!
    THE DEFAULT SHOULD BE 'DON'T SYNCHRONIZE."

If people didn't know about this default, then they wouldn't know about it when it's changed, and there would be many complaints that Thunderbird is slow. Simply flipping the default would just create another set of problems. It should be better to limit the download rate (especially for people that are on limited or expensive internet connections), combined with some kind of warning.

dupe of bug 506024 (via bug 570503) for the rate limiting part. There also some talk about the warning messages, but it doesn't have a specific bugreport.
