client.mk now contains

# if ROOTDIR equals only drive letter (i.e. "C:"), set to "/"
DIRNAME := $(shell echo $(ROOTDIR) | sed s/^.://)

On Solaris /bin/sh parses the unquoted ^ as a word separator which
ends up clobbering DIRNAME.

This shows on Solaris and not Linux, since Solaris uses Bourne shell
and not Bash.
