Ty -
Trying to summarize an email thread - let me know if or where you have questions. Thanks, too.
Looking for a blog theme "that echoes existing templates we've established with mozilla branding."
* Quick background on what this is, what it's for
Mozilla is moving from one retail data center in San Jose to a wholesale data center in Santa Clara. As part of this process, we plan to openly talk about the build out and to an extent involve the community in the "how do you build a data center" process.
Similar to how Facebook was open about their Pineville data center but where they talked about it after it was built, we'll talk about it -as- we build.
* Point to existing blogs you want this designed after
http://blog.mozilla.com/addons/
http://blog.mozilla.com/mobile/
* Types of content you're looking to have in there (commenting enabled, social media widgets? nav bar elements? etc, or not)
I think all the examples you listed I'd like to have. Could use some guidance here on what you think would work best.
When I look at those two sample sites, the nav on the top/bottom make sense to me. The right-hand categories/search make sense too.
* Number of pages
Conceptually I just want a blog. I'm not sure if there will be any static pages but could imagine one or two that talk about the purpose of this blog.
* Suggested header (name for the blog, etc) and other copy you might want in there. We can have Matej provide some polish if needed. He's our copywriter.
Could use some help here. Tara's asking me questions I hadn't thought of yet so need some time to think.
* Timing, when do you want to go live and when are design files due for implementation?
July 15 would be a good target date. Let me know how realistic that is.

Thanks Matthew
Quick questions/thoughts:
* Is this a short term thing, where you'll stop posting updates/engaging with community once the build out is complete? or an ongoing blog?
* Do you anticipate needing a side nav like those other blogs? where there is a search, category sorting, date sorting/archive, tags, etc? Trying to see what aspects/features of these other templates we can pull in, and which we can nix.
* For social we can add a twitter/fb widget in there.
--------
Ty, is this something you can whip up in the next week or two? Shouldn't be too hard given that it's using existing templates, and we recently cranked one out for the UR team.

It'll at least have a 12 month life and once that's done content update will either cease or slow down but the body or work should stick around. I suppose a lot of that depends on how it goes too.

I like tags & categories but could drop the category for just tags (honestly don't use categories as much anymore). I like the calendar/archive.

cc-ing Matej so he can share some thoughts once we have a rough idea of header / sub-head. Matej, just polishing/review, nothing too time intensive here. Thanks in advance.

Internally we use a four character name for each data center. This location is going to be SCL3.
Would it be too dry to just refer to this whole project as "Project: SCL3" ?

That's fine, but I think you'll need something a little more descriptive. If you want the header to be "Project: SCL3" you need some type of blurb below it explaining the project goals and what the blog is about. If you can do a draft of that, Matej can review and polish as needed.

I was imaging that the first blog post would be the intro on what this is and what we're trying to accomplish. I actually have an outline :)
I have several blocks of 10+ hours and hope to have a draft of something that I can share. Thanks!

That's fine. But if someone finds this blog 6 months into the process, I'd imagine the first blog post will no longer be there to serve as an intro. Which is why I think a short blurb in the header is helpful.

Ty: please let us know if this is still on track - especially given other things on your plate and the engagement on/off-site. July 15th is around the corner...
mrz: if you have any drafted posts to share that'd be great. It will help us mockup the page with realistic content vs. FPO.
Thanks.

I'm sorry, I haven't anything to share. I know, I said I would and I dropped my own ball. :(
I likely won't have anything before the weekend and if Ty has other pressing projects, I'm okay sliding my own a bit.

Thanks mrz. Ty will be traveling and we've got the engagement team on/offsite next week... so our availability is spotty and things will be slower than usual. He also has a few other pressing items on his plate. So if we can push this out a bit, that'd be great.

Hey mrz, Ty is going to shoot to get this done in late July to early August. We needed to shuffle a few things around on his plate. Hope that works. We'll swing back around to this bug as soon as we can. thanks!

Hey mrz. Any updates for us here in terms of content? Otherwise, Ty.. with the work-week behind us, lets try and get this moving soon.

I don't and lease negotiations are taking longer so there's no rush until that's wrapped up. Sorry. Will provide updates as I have them.

Ok. Thanks for the update. Ty is pretty swamped, so... we'll put this back on hold until further notice from you.

mrz, any thoughts?
Ty, I don't think we necessarily need sample posts to get going on the design here. I think we can follow the existing templates we've had to explore something basic here... and then build on top of that if needed. Sound good?

Sorry guys I had absolutely no idea lease negotiations would take ~2 months.
Ty, I'll ping you when I have something but you could put me at the bottom of your list right now.
Thanks for being patient.

mrz. haven't forgotten this, but it's been placed as low[er] priority. Is that okay with you? please advise.
Comment 24•13 years ago

yes, and sorry for the day late response. It'll probably come back to life in a week or two (sorting through some legal logistics but the lease has already been signed and we've already started building out).

If this goes, I'm going to wrap this onto the IT blog.
