The current situation: * In Navigator, Ctrl+L does `Open Location'. * In mail/news, Ctrl+L does `Forward'. * In Navigator, Ctrl+K does nothing. * In mail/news, Ctrl+K does nothing. * In message composition, Ctrl+K activates spell-checking (a non-existent feature in Mozilla). I suggest this be changed to the following: * In Navigator, Ctrl+L does `Open *L*ocation'. * In mail/news, Ctrl+L gives focus to the folder menu in the *L*ocation Toolbar (bug 21344), for quick selection of mail folders when the folder pane is not visible. * In Navigator, Ctrl+K does `Send Page'. * In mail/news, Ctrl+K does `Forward Message'. * In message composition, the keyboard shortcut for spell-checking either stays as Ctrl+K, or is dropped altogether -- since those likely to use it often enough to remember the keyboard shortcut for it will probably have it turned on for automatic checking before sending anyway.
Ctrl+K is also used for Netscape Composer Spell Check. Cc'ing Charlie and Beth.
I don't have any info on the popularity or frequency of use for Ctrl+K for Spell Check in Composer. If we can agree on another key, it's fine with me. Note that it must be the same in both web page and message Composers.
I don't see a problem w/ ctrl+k doing two things, one in navigator/messenger and one in editor/composer. in the first case you have a readonly medium and choose to edit it, in the second case you have a composition and choose to verify it.
I agree with Charlie that whatever is decided, Standalone Editor/Composer and Mail Compose should be the same.
cc'ing mail folx who might interested...
I would strongly recommend that Ctrl + k in mail would continue work as it have in Netscape 4. If at least using Imap, it compacts the folder.
yeah, ctrl-k compact bit me when mpt mentioned it in another bug. If it's compact folder, then why o why is it not displayed in the menu??
Ctrl+Shift+K is currently "discontinue text styles" in Composer. That shortcut might have to be moved in order for Ctrl+K to become "forward message" / "send link to page". (See bug 78058 for a similar problem involving "discontinue link".)
I'm totally apposed to using Ctl+K for Send Page or Forward Message. We already have key conflicts that are making us change related keys. Please see bug 76917.
Depends on: 76917
Accel+K is currently "Check Spelling" in both Web and Mail Composers, and was also used for that in 4.7
can we mark this as won't fix?
Fwiw, I'd rather not see this get wontfixed.
* Mozilla doesn't have a spell-checker. * `Discontinue text styles' sounds very 1980s. I haven't seen such a command in a word processor for years. * accel+K did Forward in 4.x, as you can see from the screenshot.
Mozilla may not have a spell checker now, but obviously it's a very important feature and it will have one eventually. Accel+K *is* Spell Checking in Mail Composer; it is Foward only in the main mail window. I reiterate my opinion that trying to have the same shortcuts in mail window and mail composer is too difficult to do -- editing features should have preference in mail composer.
Why has the Send Page option been removed from the pop up menu... Could it be supported again.
Manoj: see bug 26939 for discussion about whether "send page" should be in the content area context menu.

Here's the current key mappings from communicator 4.x: http://help.netscape.com/products/client/communicator/qrc/msshrtpg.htm Compress Folder is Ctrl + K on windows and Alt + K on UNIX Forward Message is Ctrl + L on windows and Alt + L on UNIX The Mac platform does not have a Compress Folder short cut and maps accl + K to Forward message. Consistant shortcuts should be used on all platforms. Since a larger installed base (win + unix) uses K as Compress and L as Forward that standard should be adopted.
The Composer team has thoroughly discussed issues of key accelerators with jglick and we all agreed that various mail-related keys should not be implemented in the Composer. Composer has too many conflicts with the proposed keys, and in the editing context the Composer keybindings are more important. E.g., Spell checking in a Composer window is certainly more important than compacting folders, getting new mail, or other mail tasks not directly relating to editing tasks.
removing myself from the cc list
Is there anything here worth salvaging? ctrl-K in mail is now spell check. hasn't ctrl-K in browser standardized to search field?

As this has been dead for quite some time now and I'm not sure if those assessments from years ago are still true for current SeaMonkey, let's close this bug.
