We use the Spanish version of Thunderbird-3.1.11 (as packaged by http://portableapps.com/) at work and I was told that there is an English spelling dictionary, but no Spanish one.

I don't think this is an issue with the PortableApps packaging, but sorry if you ship Win32 localized binaries with their proper spelling dictionaries.

Could you ship localized versions of Thunderbird with their proper spelling dictionaries? (I'm afraid we don't have internet access at work [mail servers are on the intranet]).

This is a decision for the Spanish localisers. They need to have access to an appropriately licensed dictionary.

There is a Spanish spelling dictionary indeed:

https://addons.mozilla.org/es-ES/thunderbird/addon/spanish-spain-dictionary/

You can download it once and install it manually if you don't have access to an Internet HTTPS connection.

But, as Mark says, we can't ship it as part of Thunderbird binaries because of license incompatibility (despite AMO constraints, the dictionary is actually tri-licensed, but it uses GPL 3.0, instead of GPL 2.1, the required version for Mozilla).

So, we can't do anything about this, thus I'm closing this bug.
