We need a definition of forum inactivity first.

Something like "X amount of points will be subtracted after Y amount of days without pointing an answer"? Do we only do the subtraction once or do we need to keep subtracting following some algorithm?

For every week a contributor is inactive, subtract X points. A contributor should not lose more than Y points.

What happens if they come back? Can they lose another Y points if they go away again? Do they get back the points they lost?

They don't get the point back by coming back. 

The idea of having a floor of points you can lose is that we don't want to degrade a high-level contributor back to the number of points of a beginner. I don't know what the best approach is. Perhaps it's that it won't subtract your score beyond a certain number. I.e. once your score drops to 1000, it won't subtract any further.

I have one issue with this - it creates a possibly roadblock if we want to associate karma with additional permissions later (like, being able to mark answers as solved, or having more weight in using helpful/not helpful buttons)

How about tracking how much of a user's karma is "recent" instead?

Ricky, to answer the initial question:
I think all of the following would mean activity:
* replying to a thread
* asking a question
* tagging a question
* posting in the contributor forum

Not counted as activity:
* being logged in
* being voted on (answer marked as solution or helpful)


I personally don't think that we should start taking points away for inactivity, but rather time based. Like: Points that are older than 365 days only count 25% of original value or something, but I think we need to talk about that first.

For now it would be good to just count the days of inactivity.
