Support HTTP browsing by default, with HTTPS only used where absolutely necessary to improve performance. Users complain that HTTPS slows the connection unnecessarily.

Very little support for this idea here, but the people on UserVoice were all over it. Might be best to keep it open.

John from 9 months ago has no idea what he's talking about. We have been using HTTPS by default for ages and hear very few complaints. The last mention of this was probably more than one year ago. Closing pending greater (any?) interest.
