User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1) AppleWebKit/535.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/13.0.782.55 Safari/535.1 Steps to reproduce: i had a perfectly running 3.1.11 (win32/windowsxp) (many months working, single pop3 account on ssl/995 and smtp outgoing server entry). i upgraded the 3.1.11 to 5.0 via the help/about/checkforupdates menu of thunderbird. it notifies me about new 5.0, downloads the delta, restarts, applies the delta, checks the plugins, starts up the 5.0 very briefly, i see the menu appear, the two tabs (main folders mail tab and the lightning/calendar tab), no actual content gets drawn in these two tabs and the thunderbird window suddenly quickly disappears (not a clean shutdown, probably some sort of crash or quick error exit or something). i could reproduce this situation by uninstalling the 5.0 from controlpanel/add/remove-programs and reinstall the 3.1.11, which gave me back my working 3.1.11 with all my mails, folders, calendar still present. i did these steps multiple times over and over. no luck. 3.1.11 is the only state that works for me. even downloading the complete .exe installers from the mozilla.org servers for 3.1.11 and 5.0 (checked their digital signatures, thats all fine) does not help. whenever i go for 5.0 (even when first uninstalling the normally working 3.1.11 keeping the tb3.1.11 profile/data and installing the 5.0 .exe installer then) it briefly displays the main window, two tabs visible without content and the menu and window borders/frame, and then vanishes. Actual results: i have searched for thunderbird logging mechanisms, and found out about: NSPR_LOG_FILE=c:\tblog.txt NSPR_LOG_MODULES=all:5 and i find some extensive log in the newly created tblog.txt file then, i had a multi megabyte logfile with the normally working 3.1.11 and when doing a clean shutdown it was displaying about unloading various modules and closing handles and internal structures and such things. with the 5.0 startup/vanish attempt the logfile is much smaller and the end of the logfile doesnt look like the 3.1.11 as far as i can tell, it looks like rather some internal structures corruptions or all of a sudden all logging stopped or something i dont really wana leak all the internal (mail/accounts related) information in that log, there are some email addresses and account handles and profile path names being shown. any advice on what to report and how to submit the logfile? i have also searched for this kind of bug but havent found any entries on bugzilla, maybe someone point me to an already active bug if any exists? thanks. regards.
the generated logfile of the startup of the upgraded 5.0 (from 3.1.11, win32/windowsxp). sanitized the mailadresses and names a bit. 7zip packed archived logfile/textfile.
Does the crash reporter show up ? Does starting in -safe-mode helps (see http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe-Mode) ?
no it does not. nothing shows up, only the main windows vanishes all of a sudden before even greeting me that it arrived at the new 5.0 version. i would have written so otherwise :) i have had a number of normally working 3.1.x to 5.0 upgrades on other machines (all winxp). this one machine is causing the trouble so far. the only thing i can think of is this pop3/ssl account. i think i used to submit a bugreport or take part in an already present bugreport about the fact that thunderbird (in the past at least til 3.1.11 included) never auto-checks pop3 mails when its an ssl pop3 account, one always needs to manually press the check-for-mails button or trigger the function via the menu. i dont think this bug ever got sorted out or worked on. i think i remember other people also posting their similar experiences. but this can hardly be a problem for the 5.0 upgrade problem? greets.
Ok other things That you could do is make sure that the drivers on this machine are up to date - and if not update them.
drivers in what regard? the machine is fine. thunderbird is a highlevel app after all. tb 3.1.11 works immediately normally when i revert back to it. 5.0 simply exits. i have attached the log. any other suggestsions? the operating system and components are fine. about the driver stuff you might be right, i could think of these 2d/3d/directdraw acceleration things, what were the strings of this ....layer.accelerate entry and others that can be disabled? do i set that in the prefs.js or how exactly manually? maybe could help? thanks.
about safe mode: odd enough, i only have a single entry (no subgroup called mozilla or mozilla thunderbird in the startmenu) in the startmenu. what were those commandline parameters for safemode? "thunderbird.exe -safe" ? thanks.
thunderbird.exe -safe-mode -console did the trick for now. the main window appears and stays this way. two tabs visible. now i can look into the about:config, accel.... settings and such things. maybe it has to do with that.
if it works in -safe-mode the issue is with an extension. Try disabling all extension and enabling them one by one.
i have set the layer acceleration disable to true and removed/reinstalled the lightning (beta4). now thunderbird 5.0 comes up normally in standard mode. the only other addons i have are lookout and a dictionary. i only reinstalled the lightning addon. dont know what the bug really was about then. i have had lightning running on many other 3.1.x installs as well and they upgraded normally to 5.0 without any hassle. thanks for the help. regards.
Did you disabled add-on compatibility versions ?
dont think i ever changed a thing on that thunderbird 3.1.x installation. its roughly only year old. i added the pop3/ssl account back then and lightning thats all. ever since it upgraded itself all normally up to this glitch. dunno what happened.
