Chris and Janet discussed this idea on Basecamp.

Chris:
"What would friendship/following mean in the context of MDN? Is it about being aware of another user's activity on MDN (e.g. when they submit a demo or contribute to docs)? Or is it just about reputation, acknowledging that you appreciated someone's work? The former might be useful for leaders, so that they could follow the activity of the groups they're managing, but less so for individuals, given how sparse the rate of updates could be. For the latter, a means of 'liking' or 'favoriting' a contribution might make more sense, perhaps integrating into an accolade system (e.g. badges, achievements) of some kind.

Janet:
"We might consider a 'groups' feature, or at least the ability to see what set of users are interested in a given topic."

We would be fine if this didn't make it into MDN 2.0.
