The fix for Bug 350174 introduced the "Current Tasks" filter as well as modifying the "Incomplete Tasks" filter to accommodate the display of individual occurrences of repeating tasks. Part of the fix included adding a date range to those filters, to avoid having an unlimited number of tasks appear when the tasks are set to repeat indefinitely. The date range is determined by the mini-month, allowing the user to select a date in the future to display tasks that start on or before that date.

There has been some user feedback that this UI is not intuitive. I would like to use this bug to discuss how this might be improved.

One thought I had was to rename the "Current Tasks" filter to something along the lines of "Starting before Selected Date". I'm not sure how that would work for the Incomplete Tasks filter, but maybe it would at least give the user the idea that the mini-month can affect the tasks displayed.

Maybe I'm over-simplifying this but it seems that "Current Tasks" could be based on the Start date while "Incomplete Tasks" could ignore the Start date. It seems this would address the feedback in bug 617277 comment 20.

In any case I really like the current behavior of the Today Pane which seems to use the "Current Tasks" filter.

That raises the same problems as discussed in Bug 350174, there's no good way to show repeating tasks in a filter with an unbound end date. Maybe we could keep the Incomplete Tasks filter's behavior and rename it Current Incomplete Tasks (or something similar to Current Tasks if we change that name) and add another filter for "Future Incomplete" that would behave like the All filter but not include completed tasks.

I think it makes more sense too, but I've seen mixed feedback on that. I think Bug 415548 will help to resolve that though.

From my point of view I would expect to see
+ current tasks - as described above: to be completed within the selected time frame
+ incomplete tasks - ALL tasks, that are not finished yet - until the end of all times; to prevent an enormous amount of recurring elements I guess for every tasks the next occurence should be the right choice.

I agree that the filter choices in Task Mode are not intuitive and none of them do the one thing I want in this pane. I think Current Tasks behaves as it should: shows tasks where today is between the task's start date and the due date, plus overdue tasks. This is the view I like for the Today Pane. But for Task Mode, I would like a view that shows all tasks that are not completed yet: that is, current tasks plus future tasks. I think this is what Incomplete Tasks should show. Intuitively, it should be the exact opposite of Completed Tasks. Next Seven Days is the only one with behavior close to what I want but the 7-day timeframe is too short.

I also think that completed tasks should disappear in views like Current Tasks (in both Today Pane and Task Mode). As it is now, a task that I mark as completed today will still be visible with a line through it, until tomorrow. The Show Completed Tasks checkbox in the Today Pane seems to have no effect. I have it unchecked but I still see completed tasks from today.
