With negative karma action for unhelpful votes [but 671359], users can get negative karma points. Suggest they get cut off at zero.

1) register new user
2) user answers a question
3) 2 other users vote the answer was 'not helpful'

expected: zero karma points for new user
actual: -14 sad face points

Just clarifying, Rebecca, is this giving you as a forum leader a sad face? We're not showing points to users. I agree that we wouldn't want to give them an unpleasant experience.

From an admin's point of view, don't we need to know if a new user's answers are marked unhelpful? I would hope we can use this data to identify whether the user needs more assistance or is a troll.

We're not now, but I thought we would eventually show these points in the forums, otherwise we'll need to change this from a waffle flag (intended for temporary use during project testing and rollouts) to a permission (intended for long-term use to hide content from most users).

This maybe needs its own bug: we have lists of our top-performing users but not our bottom-performing users, which seems equally as important.

re: The PRD specifies that points will not be revealed. Do we need a ticket to move points to permissions?

re: identifying struggling users: We're going to work with the metrics team to develop a new forum admin metrics dashboard. I'm sure it will need a ticket but not sure at what point.

Yes, that was a misunderstanding on our part, and we should make that switch. Waffle flags should not be considered a secure permission system.

I recently (when adding the top contributors for karma) did a change so the points in the support forum show only to users that are staff. If we need to to be a permission then I can file a bug for that.

I'd say yeah, there are lots of reasons someone could be marked staff, having nothing to do with Questions.


So, it sounds like negative karma is OK and there's nothing to do here, right? Feel free to reopen if that's wrong.
