User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.18) Gecko/20110628 Ubuntu/10.10 (maverick) Firefox/3.6.18
Build ID: 20110628230543

Steps to reproduce:

Click the "Get Mail" button when I'm not connected to the network, or when the network is not working for some reason

Actual results:

- A popup message appears saying Thunderbird cannot connect to the pop server (this is OK)
- At the same time, a message appears in the status bar which says "No messages to download" (this is wrong)

Expected results:

- The popup messags is OK
- The message on the status bar should be similar or identical to the popup message, or anyway clearly indicate that it has been impossible to connect to the server. "No message to download" is very wrong, because it means that you have connected to the server and have checked and that there actually are no messages to download.

This one is crazy old,and I'm going to say no longer valid.

If no one objects I'll close it on May 20th

5 days is a bit short to solicit feedback.

Also, Thunderbird triage is not in the habit of using INACTIVE just because a bug is old, because often old bugs really are not gone and even have more recent duplicates. (Firefox triage is using INACTIVE to shut down old bugs, but the odds are favorable a very old firefox bug really is gone because over the decades they have done way more bug fixing than Thunderbird.)

So if it were no longer valid then you would close either WORKSFORME if in your testing the steps described do not reproduce the problem, or INVALID if in your experience it likely the conditions have changed such that it no longer exists, or never was a bug.

I'm pretty certain if you test a pop account you will find that this is WFM. (at least, that is what I found)

I reported the bug myself and am no longer able to reproduce, so I think it's fixed.

Kind of. The behavior now is still suboptimal but makes much more sense.

The popup has been replaced by a system notification or whatever it's called.
The status bar now shows the message "Looked up [domain.com]...", and that message remains in the status bar until something causes another message to replace it, for example if you hover on a link within an email.
It's rather questionable that the message "looked up..." remains for an unpretictable apparently random time, which might be forever or until whatever unrelated random action results in another message replacing it. But at least the message indicates the last action that was completed and is not a plain lie.

Thanks for the update
