User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:5.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0 Build ID: 20110615151330 Steps to reproduce: Every time when I open an e-mail (IMAP) with an attachment Thunderbird takes a long time to show the text of the mail, apparently first downloading the attachment ("downloading message" is what it says in the lower left corner). When the mail text finally appears and I click on the attachment to open it, the download of the attachment starts again, this time in a separate "Opening XYZ" window. Actual results: Time and bandwidth was lost. If the attachment is large and/or there are many of them, it can take 15 minutes and longer to check all mails. Still the attachments are not accessible. Clicking on each attachment will cause it to be downloaded anew. Expected results: Either the text of the mail should become visible within a second or two and the attachment can be downloaded in a separate process, or, less desirable, the downloaded attachments should be readily accessible. This bug has been with Thunderbird for at least five (5!) years and it still happens all the time and on every computer it's installed on - if the mail is in an IMAP folder.

Mvesseur, ISTR some changes have been made. But perhaps they don't affect your situation. Do you still see this problem when using version 9?

Hi Wayne Mery YESSS! It's been solved. Now an attachment will download entirely and be available for viewing or storing immediately - despite the fact I am still in Thunderbird 8.0. I'm updating to 9.0 and... Presto! It works here too. Thank you very much! Not to be anal, but there is one thing still not entirely as it should be: The text of the e-mail with the attachment will not show until the attachment is downloaded. It is not possible to have a quick look at what the e-mail is about an THEN decide whether I want to download or not, so checking e-mails can still take a lot of time that way. You can see how that can be a nuisance if you happen to have a lot of friends sending you e-mails with "funny" videos and Powerpoint presentations. Then again, it may be dependent on certain settings with my provider or in my copy of Thunderbird. I will leave the status UNCONFIRMED until I have your response. - Marinus
