Opening this bug to schedule the redirect of mozilla-europe.org traffic to the merged site at mozilla.org/firefox + locales
We'll revisit another traffic solution for Pascal's Mozilla Europe community site project as that gets closer.
Thanks!

Flags: in-testsuite?
Moving to 3.10 release.
Pascal is back from vacation on September 5, so ideally this can go out timed with the Sept 7 release.
Target Milestone: 3.0.9 → 3.10

From what I heard on our call today, Anthony is working on this?

Yes, Anthony can you put an update inside this bug for everyone to get updated?

No I'm not working on this. We talked about bug 680147 during the call. De-assigning myself.
I think this bug needs more discussion/clarification about what is needed and what the mozilla-europe.org owners want.

Sorry about that, I considered making this the bug for IT to implement the redirects. But I think we should probably redirect from the mozilla-europe PHP codebase so that we can do smarter redirects.
Pascal, what do you think?

This really needs an owner.

Can someone help me understand what the holdup is here? I'm still not sure...we've been talking about this for months, so it shouldn't be a surprise (nor should it be all that controversial at this point).
Am getting frustrated.

This is a major change for a website that represents and was created by Mozilla Europe, a non profit organization that still exists. Since Tristan is the president of Mozilla Europe, he should decide on what is to be done here and specifically the schedule. Assigning to him.

Hey Tristan. Can you weigh in or ping me offline so we can discuss?
From my perspective, we simply want to split the current MozEU traffic between the product pages, which are being moved to mozilla.org/[locale]/firefox (which is what this bug is for), and a community site (which is a work in progress as far as I know).
But, from chatting with Pascal he's also worried about the implications to MozEU beyond the website, up to and including PR issues, funding, etc. To me, it seems like those are separate but I understand his concern.
Although this particular bug was opened in August, it's something we've been talking about for a few months now and I'd been led to believe had already been agreed on. If we need to open that up again, let's have that discussion soon so we can figure out the best course of action.
Thanks-

Also, updated the name of the bug to sound a little less drastic...we're not proposing completely redirecting *all* traffic to MozEU, just the traffic to the product pages (which is still a lot, but not the same as all by any means).
Summary: [One Mozilla] Redirect all mozilla-europe.org traffic to mozilla.org/firefox locale pages → [One Mozilla] Redirect product-related mozilla-europe.org traffic to mozilla.org/firefox locale pages

One more thing and then I'll stop spamming you all...Tristan, if you want a bit more background info to get caught up I've attached a really good traffic report that Patrick put together.
And here are the notes from a meeting on the subject from earlier in the summer:

Thanks!

data point, the only "product" page left is the home page which is focused on promoting firefox downloads, all firefox pages have been migrated to mozilla.com a long time ago (now mozilla.org/firefox) and redirects were put in place on the European site to ensure nobody gets a 404 and lands on mozilla.org/firefox/** and mozilla.org/rhunderbird/** pages. The traffic report attached as a reference is 2 years old and represents the traffic we had back in May 2009.

Are you sure?
http://www.mozilla-europe.org/de/ does not redirect me anywhere and shows me essentially the same as http://www.mozilla.org/de/firefox/

Fred, that's exactly what I said, except the home page which promotes Firefox, everything is redirected.

Btw, the historical Firefox page was specifically http://www.mozilla-europe.org/de/firefox/, the home page recently became another Firefox download page when we released Firefox 4 because that realease was so important we wanted to make sure it would be a success.

Considering the report that John has posted in comment #12 ("MozEU traffic routing report" by Patrick Finch), it's obvious that we want to proceed with the redirection plan ASAP.
What should I do in this bug to make it happen?

Fantastic news, thanks Tristan.
In terms of next steps, I think mainly it's a matter of Anthony (or James or Fred) working with IT to make it happen. WebDev guys, does that sound right to you? What's your ideal workflow here?

Hey Pascal, it looks like
http://www.mozilla-europe.org/de/
forwards to mozilla.org already? Can you confirm? If so, then this bug has silently been fixed while we weren't looking ;)

It does, however, not maintain the locale, (i.e., forwards to en-US), so that's probably a different bug.
