Steps to reproduce:

I use Thunderbird to access several IMAP accounts.

When I use the unified folder view (one common INBOX) and have the INBOX selected, detaching an attachment results in a duplicate mail (the original with the attachment and a new one without the attachment).

When I select the respective Inbox directoy (i.e. not the unified INBOX) and do the same, no duplication of the email occurs and the attachment is correctly detached.

Expected results:

working on the unified INBOX should result in the same behaviour when detaching than working on a specific inbox listed under the unified one.

Do you still see your problem in recent Thunderver version?

"Detach/Delete attachment" in IMAP is;
  (1) fetch body of original mail of UID=ABC.
  (2) append(upload) new version of the mail with attachment part detached/deleted.
  (3) fetch the new version. UID=DEF(ABC<DEF).
  (4) delete old version = uid store ABC +Flags(\Deleted)

Order "Order Received" column value == UID if IMAP folder.
What UID is shown for duplicated maails in Unified folder?

When duplicated mails happened at Unified Folder(UID=ABC and UID=DEF),
what UID is shown at real folder of relevant IMAP account? (shown as if child folder of Unified Inbox) 
(a) Both ABC and DEF shown? (delete of old version is not executed.)
(b) ABC only? (upload of new version somehow failed)
(c) DEF only? (normal state, if IMAPv delete model != Just mark is as deleted)
If (a), problem == If Unified Folder, delete of old version is not executed.
If (c), problem == message display at Unified Folder is not correct.  

What is IMAP delete model of all IMAP accounts?
  Move to trash, Remove immediately, Just mark it as deleted
All IMAP accounts use same IMAP delete model?

Is Inbox Offline-Use=On? Offline-Use=Off? (Folder Properties, Synchronizaation)

If Saved Search Folder, Shift+Delete'd mail is shown with "strike-thru line/Deleted mark" as expected when "Just maark it as deleted" is used.
It may depend on existence of POP3 Inbox or Inbox of Local Folders(always "Move to trash"), or IMAP delete model of other IMAP account, or delete model of account which holds mail of smalles UID in Unified Folder, or delete model of first found account in Unified Folder.

IIRC, following was observed in old versions of Tb.
  When "Just mark it as deleted" model is used,
  if Unified Folder,
  Shift+Delete'd mail is shown without "strike-thru line/Deleted mark".
However, I can not see this phenomenon in recent Tb releases.
In recent Tb releases, Shift+Delete'd mail looks hidden at Unified Folder, even when IMAP delete model=Just mark it as deleted.

In display of Shift+Delete'd mail with IMAP delete model=Just mark it as deleted, Deleted mark == trash can icon before Subject, and text is shown with strike-thru line. These are done via CSS. So, if Theme is not standard one, the trash cn icon, stike-thru line may not be shown even when IMAP delete model=Just mark it as deleted.
