We're using the standard mozilla.org design and the header and footer are overloading the amount of design needed for the marginal amount of content to be seen on the phonebook. We should minimalize it to be a lot more user friendly and new-feature-friendly in the future. The idea is to minimalize the design elements so as to expose the amount of content we will be opening up in the profiles and search functions of the app. Things Needed: * Determine amount of graphics work needed * Get an understanding of how many templates need to be changed * Note any performance hits expected (and found) and mitigate Not assigning a milestone just yet since we don't know when John's team can get to this, but the expectation is that it should be done in Q4.
Thanks Aakash. Like you said, we won't do much on this until Q4, but it's good to have this as a reminder now. Also, we can use this bug to track progress on implementing the new design, but I also recommend filing a design bug where we can handle the actual creative/design discussion.
Aakash, I think you and I should talk with Mary about our strategy for the site before making a decision about a redesign. The mozilla.org/firefox template is optimized for a user audience, but the phonebook is for a contributor audience so that template may not be the best fit. We can certainly look at minimizing the header and footer, but that can be achieved in a number of ways -- including working with the current phonebook design or adopting a different template.
I'd like to be included in that discussion as well.
John, sure. Happy to include you. For context, can you let us know what your goals are for the mozilla.org/firefox template? Would you like to see it on all 200 Mozilla sites? If not, what sites do you think it makes sense on?
I'll schedule a meeting. Bugzilla isn't the best place to have a discussion that can span an hour in face time. The purpose of this re-design is user experience related. Crystal should be involved in this too.

aakash: I'd be happy to be in the meeting.
I'd like to be part of this meeting too, as I'm doing the front-end work on the site.
Here's the take-aways from the meeting we had: * Dino head should be there as a core requirement for the phonebook * File a design bug where Crystal and Aakash will work with Creative's designer-on-hand to re-design the site * Crystal will play with Mozillians.org when its up on staging and ready to go live as a form of UX analysis for the re-design * One Mozilla design isn't a core requirement for the Q4 re-design Rest of the notes can be found at - http://etherpad.mozilla.com:9000/nzjdcf0t8W As for re-doing the UX, here's a current set of mock-ups - http://www.flickr.com/photos/aakashhdesai/sets/72157627448049783/ To reduce the amount of bug comments, if you have questions and comments about the mock-ups, e-mail me directly. Crystal and I will work on finishing this up with the designer going forward into Q4.
Sadly, Crystal doesn't have time to tackle this in Q4. Since we're working 1.3 into Q4, I'll move this back to 1.4, which should come out sometime at the end of January.
