Did you just do the update to 6?
How did you open a new window?

Tim
I did the update to 6 (I think) a day or two after the release.
I open the new window by doing File/New Window and this also occurs when I do Ctrl-N.

What is your setting (Tools -> Options [General tab] ) for startup and home page?

It is (believe it or not) http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/5.0/whatsnew/
Surely, this should have been amended during the upgrade to v6? Or am I being completely stupid?

I am not 100% sure how they push out the what's new URL but never seen it show up as a home page setting. If you change that setting, your issue will be resolved.
Closing bug for now - but if I hear of more people getting the issue we can re-open and try and find the root cause
