User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:6.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/6.0
Build ID: 20110811165603

Steps to reproduce:

I made a filter to direct emails from a forum to a folder based on From and put them into another folder. Worked good until May 3, 2011. At that time and on V6 too, all emails come from someone named MIKE BERRY.... instead of the person who sent it.
It does get filtered to right place... Just name is incorrect...
This started on May 3, 2011 and has continued since...

Actual results:

If I knew, I wouldn't be writing this....
Ever since May 3, 2011, the emails are re-directed to correct folder, but they change name of sender to Mike Berry

Last week using V6 Thunderbird I have built a new filter, based on FROM, moving to new folder.... and that does same thing....

Expected results:

Should have kept name of sender....

IF I GO TO ISP Mail reader... the name of sender is clearly NOT MIKE BERRY...

I have a picture of this showing the start of this
Thanks for your comments... I have sent an email to the forum where these came from as well to see if it jives with any changes they made....

Again, going to ISP Mailsite I don't see this issue...
Group: core-security
I can tell you same thing happens with V6.01. I upgraded to V6.02 a half hour ago, and did get one set of emails, and it seems to be there, too....

In V6.0 I created another directory and posted emails there... Same there, too...

?????
I can confirm that V6.02 does the same thing.....

I contacted the Tech support of the forum where this filter is set for...
and they confirm that they did no changes to their emails procedure in the May 3 timeframe.....

They suggest a un-install and re-install... but I'm concerned about losing years of emails that were saved.....

Is there something I can do to correct this?
Do you have contact for "MIKE BERRY..." in your address books?
Same problem as Bug 669925? See also Bug 674091 and Bug 682257.
Mike Berry is one of the contributors to the forum that is being filtered, but NO, I do not have him in my address book....
"Collected Addresses" is also your address book, and mail address is saved in it by default when you send mail to some one. Have you checked all address books?
Tell me where to look for this and I'll check....
THANK YOU!!! I FOUND IT....

Here's what appears to have happened.... SOMEHOW... The name Mike Berry in the Collected Addresses got re-directed to the Forum name of the Newsgroup.....

So for example, if his email was: Mike Berry@email.com It somehow got changed to:
Mike Berry@NameofEmailForum.com Therefore.... because every email came from NameofEmailForum.com It showed up as Mike Berry as the sender!!!!

I deleted Mike Berry from the Collected Emails List.... and not only did it fix all subsequent emails..... It Fixed all PAST Emails, too!!

I will pass this along to the newsgroup people....

Thanks for your suggestions!!!! Mark this FIXED!!!!
In that case, this is a duplicate of bug 672966. If you'd like more information on what's happening here, consult that bug report. You probably ran into what I mention in bug 672996 comment 6.

Sorry, that should be bug 672966 comment 6.

Check items to see whether same problem as family of Bug 672966, Bug 669925 etc. or not.
(i) Tools/Options/Advanced/Reading&Display,
[ ? ] Show only display name for people in my address book
     (unfortunately, checked by default)
(ii) Tools/Address Book, check name & Email fields of all address books
(iii) Mail address in From: header, on which your problem occurs
As written in Bug 672966/Bug 669925, uncheck of option (i) is probably a recommended workaround.
Yes... Tools/Options/Advanced/Reading&Display DOES HAVE Show Only display name for people in my Address Book.... Checked.....
But when I examined the email name in Collected Addresses, there was an error in the email address for that person... It somehow received the email address of the forum.... had that not happened, I would not have posted the bug...
This was about the time of the V4 to V5 Thunderbird updat..
I'm leaving the above indicator checked... as by deleting the Person in question, who's email got corrupted and saved in Collected Addresses.... It fixed everything... from 5/3/2011 to the present!
Following is copy of Bug 672966 Comment #13 by Jim Porter.
> here's a quick summary of how to fix this issue if you encounter it.
> There are two ways to do it:
> 1) Use the display name from the message header for everyone
> Go to Tools -> Options (or Edit -> Preferences), then go to Advanced ->
> Reading & Display and uncheck "Show only display name for people in my
> address book".
> 2) Use the display name from the message header for certain contacts
> In the message pane, click on the star next to the contact you want to
> modify, then click "Edit Details" and uncheck "Always prefer display name
> over message header".

So, next check item is additionally mandatory.
(iv) "Always prefer display name over message header" setting of all contacts in all address books you have.

Your "deletion of contact in Collected Addresses for Mike Berry@NameofEmailForum.com and/or Mike Berry@email.com" looks simpler/easier/quickest and correct operation to force "Always prefer display name over message header" disabled.
wb9iph, if you'll meet victim of this bug, please let him know good&quick workaround.
