This problem started with Thunderbird 6 and is reproduceable in 7 and 8 (didn't try 9 yet), when opening a large address book (thousands of addresses and hundreds of lists) the abook window comes up empty, the error console shows a "tree is undefined" error in jsTreeView.js. Disabling the few (1) add-ons changed nothing, clean reinstall changed nothing, the only thing that helped is disabling methodjit.chrome in the advanced config. Not sure if this is a jit bug or it is just a timing bug, since the abook with so many addresses takes 2 or 3 seconds to show any entry when working.

I'm pretty sure this is a duplicate, and that we patched this for the upcoming release.

Marco do you still have the issue with more recent builds (ie recent 8 would be fine (trying to figure out if this is a duplicate of 682096) ?
Marco: Keep in mind that the (possible) fix for this landed on August 31st - 2 days *after* your bug report was filed. If it was still busted in TB 7, it'd be worth trying it again now that the fix is in. -Mike

I did some testing with latest TB7 beta, and it looks fixed, I was unable to reproduce the issue. Thank you!
