User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.0; rv:6.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/6.0.1 Build ID: 20110830092941 Steps to reproduce: Upgraded to Java 6.0.27 for Windows. Actual results: Java console 6.0.26 is shown as "disabled" in about:addons Java console 6.0.27 is shown as "disabled" in about:addons Expected results: Java console 6.0.27 is shown as "disabled" in about:addons If there are obscure remains of Java 6.0.26 I need to know where (folder and/or registry entry) for a manual cleanup. The info is listed on about:support, and from there I found it with regedit, but that's not exactly obvious.
Old versions of the Java Console will be removed for you in a future Firefox update, see bug 654131. That bug should get the expected results here, so is this bug a duplicate of 654131?
Yes, the observed oddity is a dupe of bug 654131. I'd still like to know where precisely disabled or not extensions/plugins are found, but for the {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-00??-ABCDEFFEDCBA} Java console this is now clear: Manually delete registry entries matching the GUID and remove the subdirectory of the extensions. Maybe about:addons should get a link to about:support for similar issues.
The procedure described at http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Cannot%20uninstall%20an%20add-on#w_uninstalling-manually is fairly complicated and can be inconsistent across different globally installed extensions. However, what you seem to be after is more information about the extension in the Add-ons Manager, so changing bug to reflect that. Part of this may be covered by bug 478487.

Summary: Java console disabled → Expose or link to extension information for manual removal
I'd be ok with seeing some information like this added to about:support but this isn't going to go into the primary add-ons manager UI.

Indirectly newer portable Firefox versions such as 10.0.22esr avoid this issue: Plugins or extensions "found" in well-known places -- for values of "well-known" including "undocumented" or "only I don't know" -- now trigger a confirmation request before they are "adopted". After I confirmed this it's clearly my problem how to get rid of the "adopted" plugin or extension when I change my mind later.
