Details

When you compact a folder such as inbox it does not compact. On several 
occasions after "compacting" inbox folder getting out of Mozilla and then 
reloading it all of the messages are still there in the inbox all over again. I 
delete them and they will reappear at another reload of Mozilla. 

This normally occurs after the summary file is recreated. I have tested this up 
to the 6th Feb 2001 build and the problem still occurs
This is a dupe of bug 65630.
