As bug 687139 suggests, we're not testing the application updater under real conditions, most notably its location, which can have an impact wrt libraries it uses.
There is one xpcshell test that launches Firefox, Thunderbird, and SeaMonkey that I would have hoped would have caught this http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/toolkit/mozapps/update/test/unit/test_0200_app_launch_apply_update.js I'll investigate why it didn't catch it
We now use the real UpdRootD where the updater runs from for tests so resolving -> wfm
