Sounds like bug 687139. If you go Tools > Web Developer > Error Console, then evaluate 'navigator.buildID', what do you get ? If it starts 20110915 then the updater is broken in that build and you should download a new copy of the latest from http://nightly.mozilla.org.
I can see sth similar with l10n daily (thunderbird) 9 on mac, buildID 20110916031916.

The fix from bug 687139 was in the nightly of 2011-09-17 - strictly speaking in the first nightly that day, which is in http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2011-09-17-03-08-57-mozilla-central/. That's the first build where the updater works again. It was broken in the two nightlies on the 16th. I was mistaken in comment #1 when I said the 15th.
