Can you provide some more exact steps to reproduce - I was unable to duplicate...
i.e.
Open Firefox in Safe Mode
Go to www.yahoo.com
Click on a headline
Hit Ctrl + W
Actual results
All Firefox windows close
- go to http://www.neowin.net/news/rumor-iphone-5-press-conference-on-october-5
- in the article make normal/left click on this text/link "the Pocket Gamer web site "
- after you make the click rapidly close the current tab
- result: the new opened tab will close with the current tab
The issue is in Safe Mode too
It's not clear how you "rapidly close the current tab". Ctrl + W, Left-click on the tab close button or Middle-click on the tab? Make sure your mouse won't mis-trigger more than one click.
Use only the mouse to do all the steps.
- you click the link in article
- the link is opening in background/new tab
- after you make the click close the current tab from the close button, 1-2 seconds it takes to move the mouse
current and new tab will close
easy to replicate

Verified as WFM on:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:9.0a1) Gecko/20110920 Firefox/9.0a1
I tried to reproduce this issue several times with the steps from the previous comment but they still reproduce.
Ryan, could you please try to reproduce this on a fresh profile?
You can learn here how to make a new profile:
http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
Also, please try using the latest nightly.
I have found what is the problem, the issue it's caused by Ad Muncher, it's a conflict with firefox or something like that.
Can someone install it and confirm?

I have installed Ad Muncher on my PC and this issue does reproduce now just as described in comment #4. I couldn't reproduce this issue on other browsers (Chrome, Opera) so I suppose it's a Fx specific conflict.

Is this still an issue? Has the plugin been updated? Has anyone notified the extension author?

The issue has been present only in the Nightly builds that had smooth moving tabs from what I remember.

With WebExtensions being the only valid way of doing extensions in Firefox 57, I don't think this bug is still relevant.
