Steps to reproduce:

To a clean install (no accounts, no folders, nothing), created a new RSS feed (actually on <http://feeds.guardian.co.uk/theguardian/uk/rss> but not sure if feed relevant.  Using default view all works fine, select a message and summary (which is long for this feed) displays fine, all works as expected.  change layout to e.g. wide and displayed message pane is blank.  Select messages and still nothing displayed in message pane.  Switch view back and message pane still blank.  Nothing restores display of message.  Exist and restart Thunderbird (with whatever layout selected) and message pane works fine but switch view and same happens.

Platform: Mac OS X 10.7.1.  Thunderbird 6.0.2  No add-ons, fresh install.

you can try the MoreLayouts extension; it fixes several tabbed layout bugs and specifically works with feed layout switching.
