It would be really polite to say what the space of allowed values is, particularly for username.

So far we've treated username as [a-z0-0-_\.]{1,32} (case smashing)

Hmm, we used to have that. Seems to have gone awol. I'll see if I can dig it up or stick a new version in.

There is Bug 615583 to talk about removing periods from the set.
