John, we talked about this a few weeks back, sorry for not filing this sooner. We're looking for logos for the umbrella Paladin gaming project and the Gladius game engine project that's part of Paladin. I'm actually on vacation this week, but I think the ideas and opinions of Bobby, Dave, and Alan (whom I've CCed on this bug) on what how these might want to look matter as much or more than mine, and I wanted to get this rolling. Guys, what are your thoughts here?
One thought I have here is that Paladin is going to be made up of a lot of parts, and have many sub-projects. At the same time, we've been using names that point back to weapons and antiquity (shield, sword, etc). It might be cool to play on these two things somehow, either with a family of compatible logos or a single logo that is made-up of parts. Some other things to consider: * Paladin is about adding things to Firefox (e.g., new browser APIs for Firefox like the Joystick API) * Paladin is about building things using the existing bits of Firefox, and making them available for game development * Paladin is about creating frameworks and technologies on top of the browser for gaming (e.g., js libs) * Implicit in all of the above, but worth noting, Paladin is about gaming--it's technology with a purpose (and giving a purpose to existing technology). I'm not sure how much detail you need to do this, but this is a start.
Awesome! Is this related at all to Labs Gaming? If it isn't we can still borrow the base artwork I'd assume. I designed it, so I have some sway. :P Thoughts: - using the shield style from Labs Gaming, use a + on the shield (healing paladin standard cross-ish imagery but also addition/building/creating symbol) - Gladius could be in the same golden metal style, but a classic Roman gladiator helmet (I don't think it is too close to http://phantom.net/) rough example: http://cl.ly/2p100Q2U280q322o1T2D You can tell I'm excited about this.
Thanks for your enthusiasm, Sean, we're excited too!
What's your desired timing on this?

So I assert that the answer here is yes. > Thoughts: > > - using the shield style from Labs Gaming, use a + on the shield (healing > paladin standard cross-ish imagery but also addition/building/creating > symbol) That could work, I'll admit to like making the Paladin itself a human figure, but that's harder to make iconic. And it's not a strong preference. Although maybe turning the helmet you've sketched out for gladius into the representation of the PAladin is the way to go because... > - Gladius could be in the same golden metal style, but a classic Roman > gladiator helmet (I don't think it is too close to http://phantom.net/) > > rough example: http://cl.ly/2p100Q2U280q322o1T2D The word Gladius itself refers to a sword, a la <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladius>, so I'm wondering if that wouldn't be more suitable. > You can tell I'm excited about this. :-) (In reply to John Slater from comment #4) > What's your desired timing on this? Alan's (and Bobby?) is/are presenting at NewGame on November 2nd, so if it were possible to get something by Friday the 28th, that'd give a day to get the logo into the slides. Bobby, Alan, Humph, can you chime in with your aesthetic/symbolic thoughts here so that we can get the direction set and hopefully have enough time to get this stuff drawn before the preso?
Yeah, having logos for NewGame will be really great. Especially if we're able to hand out stickers perhaps :). What about having all the symbols on a shield? Helmet on sheild for Paladin, and Sword on shield for Gladius. I like having a consistent and immediately obvious visual theme amongst related projects. Shields might be treading on someone else's territory, but sticking to some object as a backdrop will make people think "Paladin!" right away.
Hey all I churned out examples with helmet and sword on shield: http://cl.ly/3v3M1O0l0a0s0T2m3o2d I made a silver/gold version as the gold on gold might get lost at lower sizes, but it DOES look like epic loot. Let me know your thoughts.
LOVE
These are so cool. I'm particularly taken by the silver ones. These are distinct and awesome.
These look really awesome! My only concern is that I'd like to use the shield for a project related to gladius (aegis). Can we put the symbols on something other than a shield?
The shield is based on Mozilla Labs Gaming (http://mozillalabs.com/wp-content/themes/labs_project/img/gaming-header.png) so it is already used within this area and I'd like to keep it for consistency if possible. A shield with a clenched fist symbol could be used for aegis - symbolism for strength, protection.
I'm not convinced that Mozilla Labs Gaming is really alive in any other form than Paladin. I could be wrong about this, but CCing Pascal to get his opinion...
(In reply to Dan Mosedale (:dmose) from comment #12) > I'm not convinced that Mozilla Labs Gaming is really alive in any other form > than Paladin. I could be wrong about this, but CCing Pascal to get his > opinion... Labs Gaming is dead. It was a experiment, ran it's course and is done. :)
I don't feel bad using its shield then! :) Let's call it an evolution. Even though it is dead, I think the shield use for these logos works well for the genre of project and it's also a nice scalable brand platform.
Looking really good to me, too. +1
are we good to close this out?
If approved, I can save out PNGs + EPS files.
Approved. I'd like to use these for New Game!
Sweetness! Thanks Sean. CLosing.
