Details

I am unable to see any characters in any text box as I am typing on my HTC evo. I can see the word suggestions as they appear, and once I am out of the UI (keyboard down button), I can see the characters in the web pages UI field, but not as I am entering them. This is also true for browser chrome-i don't see anything in the awesome bar until I hit the hide keyboard button.
This sounds like the way Android suggestions work in Fennec. You don't see anything until the suggestion is "committed".

Brad and Alex: Is this the current way things work? or do we have expectations that things should work differently?

IIRC, this was an issue with onkeypress versus oncomposition (or some other event)
What version of Fennec are you seeing this in? Can you compare different versions (Firefox 7, Beta 8, Aurora 9, Nightly 10) to see which ones are affected by this bug?

What software keyboard are you using, and does it still happen if you change input methods?

Hm, no, I think I wasn't clear. This doesn't only happen for suggestions. Once the keyboard is up, I can't see _any_ characters as I'm typing.
Is this in portrait, or landscape, or both?

Nightly 10. I have been using Nightly for some time now, and I've only recently (last 2 days) seen this problem.

Hm... I'm not sure. I believe I'm using the default software keyboard that comes with the device. I haven't installed anything new as far as a keyboard. That said, I am using a ROM on the phone - Fresh Evo 3.5.0.1 by flipz (kernel version 2.6.32.17-gee557fd), so this could be causing some of the issues.

I'll see if I can post a video, so that'll maybe make it more clear the exact problems I'm having.

Ah yes, I forgot that - it's only in landscape. So the keyboard + the entry box takes up 100% of the screen.
So this is similar to bug 688438, except that bug is not in nightlies since September 23 when bug 612128 was backed out of mozilla-central. Can you verify which build you are using?

You can press and hold on a text field in any Android app to change input methods, if there are any other input methods available on your device.

Yep - I'm using Gecko/20110923 Firefox/9.0a1 Fennec/9.0a1. Sorry, I guess it's Fennec 9. I thought it had automatically updated to 10, but apparently I was wrong. I'll update and see if it's in the current nightly.

Ok, looks like this is an exact duplicate of bug 688438. Sorry, I didn't realize I hadn't updated to the latest nightly.
